How Many Pallets Fit in a Shipping Container – Size and Types

A pallet is as a sturdy, transportable base used for storing or shipping goods. Pallets are designed for easy movement using equipment like forklifts or pallet jacks, making them essential in logistics and material handling industries.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) plays a significant role in the standardization of pallet sizes and types to facilitate international trade and improve the efficiency of logistics operations. By establishing standardized dimensions and specifications for pallets, the ISO helps ensure that goods can be easily transported, handled, and stored worldwide.

The most popular dimension in North America for both wood and plastic pallets is the 48” x 40“ with each deck board being 3 ½ “ wide x 5/16 “ thick.  It is also the size of the GMA (Grocery Manufacturer’s Association) sanctioned pallet.

Plastic Pallets:

  • Made from plastic materials, these pallets are durable, lightweight, and resistant to moisture, chemicals, and pests.
  • Plastic pallets are often used in industries with strict hygiene requirements.

Metal Pallets:

  • Constructed from steel or aluminum, metal pallets are strong, fire-resistant, and suitable for heavy loads.
  • They are commonly used in industrial settings.

Corrugated Pallets:

  • Made from corrugated cardboard, these pallets are lightweight and disposable.
  • They are ideal for one-time use or lightweight shipments.

Composite Pallets:

  • Composite pallets combine materials like wood and plastic to create a balance of strength and durability.
  • They offer the benefits of both wood and plastic pallets.

Paper Pallets:

  1. Made from compressed paper or cardboard, these pallets are lightweight and eco-friendly.
