New vs. Used 40 Ft. Shipping Containers: Which Should You Buy?

When you’re in the market for a 40 ft. shipping container, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to buy New/One-Trip or Used Container. Each option has its own set of advantages depending on your goals, location, and budget. In this guide, we break down the differences and help you choose the best fit.

What Does “New” or “One-Trip” Mean?

The United States stopped manufacturing shipping containers in the 1980s, primarily due to:

  • High labor and steel costs
  • Strict environmental regulations
  • Lack of domestic demand compared to global output

Since then, Chinese manufacturers had scaled production so effectively that they became the global standard. Today, over 95% of shipping containers are made in China, with a few others produced in South Korea and parts of Europe.

  • Cost efficiency: Chinese factories have access to cheaper steel and mass production infrastructure.
  • Labor costs: U.S. labor costs are significantly higher, making it difficult to compete on pricing.
  • Proximity to global trade routes: Most containers are loaded with goods in Asia and sent across the ocean, meaning it’s cost-effective to build containers near the ports of origin.

Because of this, nearly all new containers in the U.S. are actually One-Trip units that were used once to ship cargo from Asia to the United States.

  • Like-new condition with minimal wear
  • Clean interiors
  • No rust or major dents
  • Paint and flooring are nearly flawless

These containers are ideal for:

  • Container offices or homes
  • High-visibility retail or job sites
  • Long-term storage where aesthetics matter

What Condition Are Used Containers In?

Used containers typically come in one of the following conditions:

Wind & Water Tight (WWT):

  • No holes or leaks
  • Doors function properly
  • Exterior may have minor dents, surface rust or a professional welded patch

Cargo-Worthy (CW):

  • Meets international shipping standards
  • Can be used for ocean freight
  • Structurally sound with working seals and doors

As-Is:

  • Priced lower, but may have:
    • Dents or holes
    • Rust or warped flooring
    • Damaged doors
  • May not be suitable for storage without repairs

Important: As-Is containers are typically sold without guarantees and are best for those who plan to modify or repair them.

Who Buys New vs. Used?

New (One-Trip) Containers:

  • Builders using containers for tiny homes or custom builds
  • Schools or municipalities that need clean, presentable storage
  • Businesses that need a uniform appearance across job sites

Used Containers:

  • Construction companies storing tools or materials
  • Farms or ranches needing dry storage for feed or supplies
  • DIYers on a budget
  • Exporters (if cargo-worthy)

Price Differences (2025 Averages)

ConditionPrice Range (40 ft. Shipping Container)
Used – As-Is$500 – $2,400
Used – WWT$1,700 – $3,200
Cargo-Worthy$2,000 – $3,600
New / One-Trip$4,500 – $6,500

Prices vary by location, market demand, and delivery distance.

Tip: Buying used often makes more sense if the container is tucked away or if appearance isn’t a priority.

Delivery Requirements for 40 Ft. Shipping Containers

At Container Sales Group, delivery type depends on your distance from the nearest yard:

  • 0–200 miles: Delivered on a tilt-bed truck. No equipment needed; the container slides off the back.
  • 200+ miles: Delivered on a flatbed truck. You’ll need a forklift or crane to offload the container.

40 ft. High Cube Shipping Containers are taller than standard units (9’6″ vs. 8’6″) and require additional clearance during delivery. To avoid height restrictions and ensure proper offload:

  • High Cube units are delivered on a low-boy tilt-bed truck when available
  • This keeps the overall delivery height within safe limits for bridges and overhead wires

Delivery Considerations

  • Have at least 150 feet of straight clearance
  • Ensure the site is level and accessible
  • Choose your door orientation (off first or last)
