IICL Containers
(For Ocean Export)

IICL Containers have strict repair standards for used containers from the Institute of International Container Lessors. IICL does not define the age of a container rather that the repairs made to the container have passed the strictest criterion out there.

Container questions (FAQ)

New shipping containers, often called one-trip containers, are manufactured overseas and loaded with cargo for a single journey to the United States. They are in like-new condition with minimal wear and are ideal for storage, modifications, or export.

Used shipping containers come in two main conditions: Cargo Worthy and Wind & Watertight (WWT).

  • Cargo Worthy containers are inspected and certified for international shipping. They include a valid CSC plate and may show signs of wear such as surface rust, dents, or welded patches but remain structurally sound. Container Sales Group can arrange a professional inspection and provide a written CSC survey certificate upon request.
  • Wind & Watertight containers are retired from shipping lines. These used containers are great for ground-level storage or container modification projects but are not eligible for ocean export. They may have cosmetic blemishes, but floors are solid and doors are operational. All units are inspected at the depot before delivery or pickup.

Used shipping containers are commonly graded as:

  • Cargo Worthy (CW): Certified for international ocean shipping, includes CSC plate
  • Wind & Watertight (WWT): Best for secure storage; no holes or leaks
  • As-Is: Discounted containers that may have significant damage, such as holes or floor issues

Any other grading terminology is informal and may vary by seller.

  • Cargo Worthy containers meet all structural and safety criteria required for ocean freight and include a valid CSC inspection plate.
  • Wind & Watertight containers are best suited for on-site storage. They are structurally sound, leak-free, and inspected for secure use, but not certified for international shipping.

Every shipping container has a CSC (Container Safety Convention) plate, usually located on the left-hand door. This plate displays the year of manufacture and other inspection information.

Used containers are selected from depot inventory based on availability and are not sold by color or manufacturer. Each unit is inspected and selected based on condition. If color matters, many customers choose to paint their container after delivery.

We recommend Sherwin-Williams DTM Acrylic Enamel or a similar direct-to-metal exterior-grade paint for long-lasting protection and a clean finish.

Yes—but only Cargo Worthy containers with a valid CSC plate qualify for ocean shipping. If you plan to export, you can choose either a new one-trip container or a used unit that passes a professional inspection. The CSC plate acts like a passport and confirms the container meets international shipping standards.

Once you choose the container size and confirm delivery needs, we’ll send you an invoice. We’ll need:

  • Name or company name
  • Billing and delivery address
  • Email
  • Delivery preference (container doors facing off first or last from the truck)

After payment is received, we’ll schedule delivery or provide pickup details, including depot address and release number.

The most common sizes are 20 ft used shipping containers and 40 ft used shipping containers. We also offer 40 ft high cube containers, which provide an extra foot of interior height—great for storing taller equipment or for modifications.

standard container is 8'6" tall, while a high cube container is 9'6" tall. The extra height in a 40 ft high cube shipping container is ideal for oversized items, shelving, or when you need additional vertical space for modifications.

Shipping Containers – Standard vs Cargo vs Conex vs Dry vs ISO vs Boxes vs Sea Cans

We have been asked why shipping containers are also called conex, cargo container, ISO, Storage container, intermodal, sea can, dry container and storage container, it’s easy to get confused.

Shipping Container Uses

To prepare for a hassle-free delivery, consider these following points:

  • Ensure you have enough space:
    • 12ft Width clearance
    • 16ft Height clearance- no wires or trees above
    • Straight line space needed:
      • 75ft – for 1 x 20ft container
      • 120ft – for 1 x 40ft container or 2 x 20ft (moved together)
  • Check the weather conditions
Weather conditions such as rain or snow can impact delivery. Ensure that the path and container location are dry and firm.
  • Solid, level ground
Containers need to be delivered on solid, level ground to ensure the doors will open and close properly.
  • Flat delivery site
It is important that the path leading to the delivery site is a level, flat surface as hills and slopes may cause the tilt body truck to get stuck.
